Cedar Class
Welcome to Cedar Class!
In our class we have Year 1 and Year 2 children and our class teacher is Miss.Slatcher.
Each week we have a Maths and Writing focus, and a variety of other subjects explored over the week. Our work is mostly linked to our termly topic.
Summer Term in Cedar
Some Cedar class pupils have returned to school this half term. They have enjoyed continuing their class topic of Holidays. Other pupils are continuing with home learning using their weekly learning packs linked to the class topic.

Spring Term 2020
In Cedar our new topic is Great Fire of London. Before we started learning about the Great Fire we needed to know all about London so our friend Paddington helped. He had just arrived in London so we had to help him with compass directions and the famous landmarks of London. Paddington even dropped his suitcase off at Alveley and his hand luggage which was full of his books.
We then started to learn about the Great Fire of London. We learnt that it started in a bakery, as the baker made bread but forgot to put his oven out properly. We all had a go at making some bread – we did super kneading and all ended up with a bun to take home. They were very tasty and we all enjoyed making them.
We have also made London Bridge from paper straws. The fire started in Pudding Lane, which was very close to the Thames, and people used water from the river to try and put out the fire. We learnt the location of London Bridge and then made our own in small groups.
In Science we have been looking at the human body and how we are all unique. We traced around the outline of some children in our class then labelled, using pictures, our main organs. We really enjoyed this and it was funny drawing around some children whilst they were lying down!
Autumn Term 2019
Cedar have had a very special treat! For our trip, we all went on the Severn Valley Railway, as our topic is travel and transport! Not only did we get to ride on the railway – we also got to meet Santa!
During the trip we met Mr Frosty, Rudolph, Mr Holly and the station manager! On the train we all met Santa (three times!!) and were lucky enough to get a present as we have all been good boys and girls. We also sang some Christmas songs with the carol singers and taught them ‘CAMEL FUNK’, one of our Nativity songs.
The children behaved superbly, and the train conductor even commented what lovely children we have at Alveley. Well done and well deserved Cedar class.
We have been having a very busy and exciting time in Cedar class! Our topic this term is ‘Travel and Transport’. We have learnt about the Titanic, hot air balloons, the first aeroplane flight and all about Space travel too!
As well as learning all about the Titanic we created our own boat pictures focusing on different lines and different patterns. Here are some that we created! We also then made our own simple boat structures out of plastic and investigated which shape bottom would move the fastest. We also designed our own flags and investigated if the size of the flag affected how fast the boat moved.
Then we moved on to finding out about the history of planes and who did the first flight ride. One of the children in Cedar brought in her plane that she had made from home. She loved showing the class and telling us all about it so we decided to make our own and here they are!
Then it was time to look at another type of transport that is up in the sky – hot air balloons! We learnt about the history of hot air balloons and then decided to make some! We made them in small groups or pairs as paper Mache takes a while! We loved getting messy with the glue.
We had lots of talk about flight so we thought it would be fun to make some parachutes! We made these in forest school and then tested if they flew. We used plastic bags, string and twigs for our basket. It was lots of fun and we loved testing them!
In Cedar, we love having our new books from the library, in particular the story sacks. A story sack is where we borrow a book and it arrives with all the props of the story too so we can act out the story. When it is our turn with a prop, we have to listen close to the story so we know when it is our turn for our prop to be used. We have enjoyed ‘Grandpas Journey Home’ and ‘The Journey’ this term.
In Maths we have been looking at tally charts and how children get to school. We asked all of the children at Alveley how they got to school and recorded it with tallies. We then created a picture graph – here we are doing our class one. We also went out into forest school and had a challenge of how many objects we could find. We had to tally them on a whiteboard as we went.
Also in Maths we have been looking at our number formation in year 1. We love getting messy to we have been practicing writing our numbers in shaving foam and making them in plasticine. We really do love this – here we are getting messy!
