Welcome to Alveley Primary School

Hello - welcome to a new look Oak Class.

Spring Term

Carding Mill Valley Trip

Wow! Even though we arctic cold temperature, I think Oak class still had a fun day learning - a trip that will live very long in everybody’s memories

Well done to everyone for their 6 figure orienteering skills. The girls did very well by winning the competition ahead of the boys.

In the afternoon, there was still time to learn about the history of the valley and it’s mill heritage. It was a fascinating place to have been involved with so much industry there and still have an outdoor swimming pool too. The surrounding hills have been crucial in the forming of Church Stretton in it’s current form today.

Parent lunch was a success on Thursday 23rd of January. Thank you to all parents that could attend. I am sure that you enjoyed the food as much as I did.

Class trip reminder for Tuesday 11th February. Please remember warm forest school clothes on the day with packed lunches only.

Year 6 SATS mornings have been very well attended so far – what a hardworking and dedicated group! Again, please come and see me with any questions regarding any concerns here. The next 6 months are potentially stressful with tests and new school transitions, so communication is vital from all adults involved to help reduce any anxieties caused by unanswered questions for your child.

Many thanks

Mr Smith

Autumn Term

Classroom

This year will begin by the children learning about Chinese culture. This will be incorporated into our writing, history, geography and art. As part of our learning, children will compare their lives in Alveley to those of children in Asia. Maths learning will be centred around learning times tables and place value number facts – then applying these in many scenarios.

Wider community

Oak class will also be representing the school in cross country and football this term across the Bridgnorth area. As well as a Chinese theme day in October, Oak class will visit the Country Park to study archaeology. Then the big class trip this term will be a residential at the Pioneer Centre in November.

I am sure you will agree this is a busy but enjoyable start to the new school year. Any queries, then please come in for a chat regarding your child’s school life.

Many thanks

Mr Smith

November

At the end of November, Oak class spent three days and two nights at the Pioneer Activity Centre in Cleobury Mortimer.

During the stay children participated in a range of activities from: climbing high, zip wiring back down, archery, caving and some even crawled through muddy obstacle courses. Unfortunately, the adults took part in a few of the activities too!

In the evenings, the children played table football, hot potato and even made their own quizzes.

What an honour to have been part of such a trip, the children are a credit to yourselves and the village of Alveley.

October

P.E in Oak

In PE this term Oak class have undertaken a 6-week social, health and wellbeing course run by Kidderminster Harriers FC. Over the weeks, children have learnt about diet, problem solving and stranger dangers. Thank-you Kidderminster, for an excellent programme.

Science in Oak

This term children have learnt about reversible changes of states in liquids.

Children tested sugar in water before finding the saturation point. We then boiled the water to reveal the sugar back crystallised.

On another experiment, children tested cornflour in water. Children learnt that mixing this creates a thick liquid solution that can sometimes presents with features of a solid.

Severn Valley Country Park

On the 23rd October, Oak class went to the Severn Valley Country Park.

We attended the park to see the landscape, wildlife and nature. The children then discussed the history of the mine and it has changed over time.

Later in the day, children interviewed a former miner and got a first-hand insight into life in Alveley half a century ago. Children also got to record their own story of life in Alveley today. Some of the children’s stories are accessible at the audible museum on the site.

To finish the day, the children got to explore ecosystems in the park. Unsurprisingly none of the children held back finding creepy crawlies – one group even found a toad!

Ni hao

On Thursday 17th October, Oak Class ran a Chinese themed day as part of our learning into the Shang dynasty. Children wore a range of Chinese associated clothes and colours.

During the day, the children wrote using Chinese calligraphy, built kites, ate Chinese food, used chop sticks, and even had a treasure hunt for lucky red envelopes with prizes.

I would like to thank parents for their great help with costumes. All in all, it was a fun day to enhance our learning with practical experiences.
