Elm 2023 - 2024
Summer:
This half term has been very busy! Year 4s have worked very hard with their times tables and got fantastic results from their multiplication check. The whole class went to a Hindu Mandir, it was a beautiful building and we learnt more about how Hindu’s worship different deities. It really tied all of our learning this year about Hinduism together. In literacy we have been reading the story ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, we created some fantastic character descriptions and retold the story. Elm have enjoyed PE this half term, we have been developing our striking and fielding skills in rounders with Mr Bennett, we have also been fortunate to have Kidderminster Harriers in which all the children have enjoyed. Half of Elm and Oak represented the school in an athletics competition this half term, everyone left everything on the track and showed the best of our school.
Spring 2:
This half term in Elm we have been learning all about ‘Sensational Shropshire’, we did a local river study on the River Severn down the country park, it was lots of fun but muddy! We have been making torches in D&T using our knowledge of electrical circuits. We then linked this to our literacy where we wrote a set of instructions for how we made our torches. We have really enjoyed having Mrs Salt come in on a Friday and developing our skills of playing the ukulele, we even learnt to play the theme tune to Spongebob Squarepants! In Elm we enjoyed celebrating World Book Day, we had lots of different characters from books from Harry Potter’s, Roald Dahl characters and a Gangsta Granny! We read some of our favourite stories to Nursery and Reception as well as creating comic strips for books!
Spring 1:
In Elm this half term we have travelled back in time to the Romans! We have enjoyed learning all about Roman battle strategies and armour! We even had a Roman visit us and Mr Marsh transformed into a Roman soldier for the afternoon! We got to ask lots of questions and found out all about their life.
We have also been learning all about electricity and produced some amazing non-chronological reports to show case our learning!
Autumn 2:
This term has been busy and exciting in Elm class! Our topic this half term has been ‘Escape from Pompeii’. We have enjoyed learning about volcanoes and rocks as well as what happened in Pompeii. During our parent workshop afternoon, we enjoyed planning and making volcanoes with our families. The best part was experimenting and making the volcanoes erupt, some more than once! As well as learning about our topic we have also been preparing for the Christmas Nativity at the church! The children have worked really hard on singing the songs for KS1’s Nativity performance and they did an incredible job!
The children have explored calypso music this half term, we have listened to different pieces and worked together as a class to create and sing our own! We even recognised some of the music out of the movie Paddington! In literacy we wrote persuasive letters to Mr Marsh to convince him that living near a volcano would be a bad idea, as well as creating fantastic acrostic poems based on Pompeii!
Autumn 1:
In Elm this term we have been very busy. We have settled back into year 3 and 4 really well. A few weeks ago, we had a visit from Bridgnorth Firefighters. We looked at ways we can stay safe in the case of a fire, we even looked at fire escapes in our own homes.
We have travelled back in time to the Stone Age! We have enjoyed learning about how their lifestyle and looking at how it has changed over time. In our art lessons we looked at prehistoric cave paintings, we then got to create our own prehistoric paint which we used to paint our own cave paintings! Elm visited the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms and took part in Stone Age and Iron Age activities. We had a great day and got up to lots such as preparing for a hunt, spear throwing, Celtic face painting and we even saw the most complete mammoth skeleton in the whole of Britain!
