Summer Term 2022
Our Topic this term is 'Under the Sea'
Elm were very excited to begin the new topic ‘Under the Sea’. Children began by thinking about what they already know and what they would like to find out. Elm were inspired to created under the sea themed artwork for the class display board. Children looked carefully at different images and photographs and experimented with a range of art materials.
Visit to Craven Arms Islamic Centre and Stokesay Primary School
Elm class had the exciting opportunity to visit the Islamic Centre in Craven Arms, linked to the class RE topic about places of worship. On arrival the pupils compared the outside of the mosque to other mosques they had researched. Sohayb, the Imam, kindly gave us a tour of the mosque and children had lots of opportunity to ask questions.
Following the visit to the Islamic Centre we visited Mr O’Malley at Stokesay Primary School and met the year 3 and 4 pupils, we enjoyed playing outside together.
Elm class represented Alveley really well, showing beautiful manners and asking articulate questions.
Spring Term 2022
A Pre-Historic Adventure for Elm Class!
Elm Class had a fantastic trip to Severn Valley Country Park, enjoying activities linked to the class topic Pre-Historic World! Using a special checklist the children found natural items that could've also been found in the Jurassic period. Pupils enjoyed becoming trainee geologists, using the special rock and fossil kits to investigate before going on their very own research expedition to collect and classify rocks and hunt for fossils! Elm Class then went on a mini-beast hunt, learning about how insects have evolved from Pre-Historic times and keeping a tally of the insects they found. We were all proud of Elm who showed keen interest and enthusiasm, sharing their knowledge and asking thoughtful questions throughout the day. A huge thank you to Ed at SVCP!
Since returning to school the children have used their insect data to create pictograms in Maths and have written recounts of the trip linked to our Literacy.
Elm discover the Pre-Historic World!
Elm Class have had a very exciting start to their Pre-Historic World topic with the arrival of some mystery eggs! The eggs have prompted lots of questions and led on to lots of learning. Pupils have enjoyed experimenting to find the best way to discover what was inside the egg, this inspired some fantastic instructional writing. The dinosaurs found inside the eggs have now provided a stimulus for our story writing!
Children have also worked with enthusiasm in maths, developing excellent understanding of addition and subtraction and applying their knowledge to solve problems.
Children enjoyed creating their own cave paintings inspired by our class story 'Stone Age Boy'. We have also used this story as a basis to create our own stones.
Elm class really enjoyed the Pre-Historic World topic day! The day began with a treasure hunt to find jigsaw pieces of information. The class returned to the class room and had to put the information card jigsaws together, to create fact cards about dinosaurs to help with our research. After some research, pupils created their own bingo boards to play Dino Bingo! Earlier research came in helpful as children had to guess the dinosaur from the clues given. Later in the morning the class began some artwork, learning about cave paintings and using this style to create dinosaur pictures. In the afternoon pupils created natural paints, played dinosaur top trumps and continued with the animation project. The class also enjoyed a dinosaur quiz, before finishing the day with assembly.
The children were full of enthusiasm all day - a fantastic day for Elm class.
Autumn Term 2021
Elm Class Visit Wroxeter
Elm class had a fantastic day at Wroxeter Roman City. The day began with a really interesting guided tour around the site. We started in the museum, where we met our tour guide Hannah. Hannah showed us a map to give us an idea of what the site would’ve looked like nearly 2000 years ago. We went out to explore the ruins, pretending to be Romans in different parts of the city and finding out more about the way they lived. In the afternoon we enjoyed creating Roman mosaics, further exploring the ruins and discovering more information by looking at the artefacts in the museum.
The children asked a huge range of fantastic questions and showed so much interest in their class topic!
Elm Class had a fantastic visit to the Severn Valley Country Park as part of their current Science topic of plants. Prior to their visit the children had been learning about types of seed dispersal. Whilst at the country park the children enjoyed exploring and discovering different types of seeds and discussing how they may have been dispersed, linking back to their learning in class. The children collected a range of seeds and have brought them back to school for further investigation!
This half term in science we have been looking at how flowering plants grow. As well as dissecting flowers, we looked at how plants grow in Forest School and found places where we thought plants were thriving and looked into the reasons why. We also planted cress seeds around the forest school as a quick way of determining which locations were best for growth.
In History as part of our Roman topic, we have been lucky enough to receive some Roman artefacts from the Shropshire Schools Library Service. We became historians for the day and thought carefully about what each item was for, who may have used it and what it can tell us about the lives of Roman people.
Topic Day
Elm had a fantastic day, thank you for all of your support with the wonderful costumes and the cardboard donations! We started an ongoing Roman Shield project which we will continue as part of our art lessons. We also learn about Roman numerals and created our own mosaics! We are looking forward to learning more about the Romans in the term ahead!
