Cedar 2018-2019
Cedar Class
Welcome to Cedar Class!
In our class we have Year 1 and Year 2 children and our class teacher is Miss.Slatcher.
Each week we have a Maths and Writing focus, and a variety of other subjects explored over the week. Our work is mostly linked to our termly topic. This term our topic is 'Super Heroes', where we will be exploring powerful important people.

We are having a visit from St John's Ambulance as not all super heroes wear capes.
We take part in Forest School weekly on Fridays where we learn and explore outdoors. This is normally linked to our class work and allows us to develop a further understanding of key concepts in a different learning environment.
I look forward to showing you what Cedar have been up to!

Summer Term
For our summer topic we have been looking at Castles. We have all loved this topic and enjoyed learning lots of new Geography and History facts about Castles! We even had a trip to Warwick castle. During our trip we went in the maze, had a workshop on attack and defence, learnt about the castle grounds and watched the Falconry show. A fantastic day was had by all with excellent behaviour!
Spring Term
For Easter the Friends of Alveley organised all our children a special Easter Egg Hunt! We had to solve lots of different picture clues. Once we had solved all our clues we got to go into Forest School to try and find our prizes – we found an Easter Egg each! What an enjoyable morning.
In February it was Miss Slatcher’s birthday. We thought what better way to learn about fractions and measurement than weighing and eating cake – so we did! We learnt about halves, quarters and thirds. We then measured the cake using g and kg. After a successful lesson we then treated ourselves to a ‘fraction’ of the cake.
Autumn - Second Half Term
What a lovely half term we have had! In Literacy we have written letters to our Italian penpals, Miss Slatcher has sent these letters to a school in Italy so we are awaiting the arrival of our letters.
We also became teachers and performers for the day. We have made huge progress in our reading so we all took a turn to read to this class.
After having our African day we have made our own African masks. We cut out our own masks and printed our own patterns on them. We really enjoyed this after learning about tribal masks in Africa.
For remembrance day, to celebrate 100 years, we made some poppies for our school display. We all then discussed what we were thankful for and the people we have to say thank you too. Some of us even knew of soldiers in our families.
We had a brilliant day for our African themed day! We made African tribal necklaces and we had a drumming workshop. Some of us even got the chance to be the conductor.
Autumn - First Half Term
This term we have had some special visitors. Our story was Cinderella and we were lucky enough to have a visit from Cinderella, the Prince and the mice. Cedar class asked them all lots of questions. These were our favourites: how did it feel when you were turned into a horse? Did your tummy have butterflies when you saw Cinderella? How did you feel when you were at the ball?
In Forest School we have been finding objects and making the initial sound out of twigs. We also did lots of Maths through forest school too. We practised our subtraction and addition sentences outside.
We also had Miss Massey from Oldbury Wells for a lesson in gymnastics. We really enjoyed it and we made our own routines. We learnt how to roll, jump and turn. We then performed them to the class as our audience.
In Science we have been looking at the world around us and habitats. During one lesson we went outside to find things that are still alive and things that were alive. Then we moved on to different habitats around the world.
In Maths we have been working very practically to learn our number bonds and adding. Year 1 have been practicing their number bonds to 5 and year 2 their number bonds to 10 and 20. We use resources to help us and choose which resources we prefer.
